This transformation is crucial not only for mitigating the worst effects of climate change but also for ensuring human prosperity and well-being. The energy sector, which accounts for around three-quarters of global greenhouse gas emissions, holds the key to this transition. By 2050, reducing global CO2 emissions to net zero would be consistent with efforts to limit the long-term increase in average global temperatures to 1.5˚C.

The journey ahead will be challenging, especially considering the diverse situations and capacities among countries. However, the growing political consensus on reaching net zero emissions provides a foundation for progress. To succeed, we must overcome our current understanding of the changes required to achieve this goal and work together towards a cleaner, more resilient energy future.
